- Choose a good location
Choose a room where there are fewer distractions. You can opt for a room that faces a scenic setting such as a garden, lush greenery, water or even the sunrise/sunset. Having a ‘feel-good room’ sets the tone and allows you to meditate with peace and calm from the get go. Decorate by painting the walls with pastel shades, hanging up a poster or painting of nice scenery, or choosing the right rugs. You can even consider an outdoor space if you find that more soothing.
- Light it up
Ensure that the meditation room has access to lots of natural light, but at the same time, keep the room cozy. A sheer fabric in a light shade that diffuses the light would be perfect to hang on the windows. If the room lacks natural light, bring in light fixtures. You can either choose dim lights or bright ones, but those that allow you to have both the options would be the best as it can cater to your moods on different days.
If you choose an outdoor space, ensure that the area isn’t too bright from the sun. Try to have some shade options such as an umbrella from which you can hang sheer curtains. This will prevent the sun from irritating your eyes or keeping your mind too alert.
- Banish technology
Technology is an absolute no-no within the meditation space. One of the objectives of meditation is to get away from the daily hustle-bustle and cut down on the distractions for a few minutes each day. Having a laptop, mobile or television in the meditation room would defeat its primary purpose. However, a music player to play some soothing music that may help you concentrate better can be an exception.
- Bring in the nature’s aura
Adding an element of nature in the meditation room goes a long way in infusing balance and harmony in the room. Nature is healing and organically relaxing. You meditate to connect with nature, and what better way to do so than by incorporating nature into the room itself. Go for eco-friendly décor like placing your favorite plant, small water feature, a jar of shells or a vase filled with your favorite flowers in the room. o enhance the energy of the space, natural crystals can also serve as reminders of your intention for your meditation session. Crystal types and meanings are unique, so they emit different vibration frequencies, which can be harnessed to support different intentions. Placing crystals in your meditation space can help to create a more supportive environment for your practice.
- Aromatherapy
Aromatherapy is believed to stimulate brain function, boost the immune system, eliminate stress and relieve muscle pain. By using essential or aromatic oils such as chamomile, lavender or peppermint, you can really soothe your mind, body and soul. You can burn some scented candles or incense sticks too.
- Personalize the space
Add some personal touches to the room by bringing in elements, sounds, smells or other objects that lift your mood. They can be bells, crystals, artifacts and sculptures such as a statue of Buddha, beads, affirmation stones, etc. Don’t put all of them together — choose only a few items at a time and swap them for other items if you want after a few months.
Trust your instincts while designing the room, but remember — do not over design or clutter the space. Create a nice little sanctuary where you can have your ‘me time’ and which allows you to relax by meditating peacefully.
