See, we grow up seeing movies and TV shows and holiday specials that extol the virtues of a “white” Christmas. We see pictures of sweaters and nights spent in front of the fire with some spiced rum (for the adults) and hot cocoa (for the kids). But Houston isn’t exactly in a “white Christmas” climate. It’s hot and humid here pretty much year round. It’s hard to have a Christmassy feeling Christmas when you live in a subtropical climate.
It’s a good thing we’ve learned how to fake it! Here are some of the things you can do if you live in a place where Christmas is typically hot, sunny and practically begs you to dive into the pool.
1. Greenery
Most of the local shops will import real Christmas trees and there is nothing like a real Douglas Fir standing tall in your living room to make your house feel (and smell) like Christmas! But don’t stop with the tree. Grab some poinsettias and talk to your local nursery about having some authentic wreaths and other decorations made. If your local shop won’t deliver flowers to you, you can always order them online without ever having to leave the home!
2. Light the Lights
Who doesn’t love Christmas lights? Sure, you might not like hanging them so much but you’ll love the affect they produce afterwards. Nobody is saying you have to outdo the Griswolds (unless that’s your thing) but adding holiday lights to your house and yard can help dress up and holiday-enhance your home. Use LED lights to help cut down on the amount of electricity you’re using (and to make up for the carbon footprint you built importing your greens).
3. Snow
Who says you can’t have a white Christmas? Okay, so buying cans of fake snow isn’t that great for your budget or for the environment but you can make your own!
Mashed potato flakes make great fake snow, but it’s best not to use too much of them indoors because they attract bugs. Still, for a little bit of fresh looking snow on the tree on Christmas day, sprinkle a little on! These are also a great fake snow solution to outdoor decorations. The flakes are bio-degradable so you don’t have to worry about accidentally causing a biohazard or killing all of the plants in your yard.
To give your windows that “fresh snow” look, get some washable white paint or markers. This is what they use in shop windows and it usually wipes off with a little bit of soap and water. Plus, you can use the paint or markers over and over again.
The truth is that, if you’re creative there is no reason you can’t have a completely traditional looking and feeling Christmas even in a hot and humid climate like Houston. Every few years though, why not turn the holiday upside down and go full tropical with it? It’s fun to keep your family on its toes!
