Finding a Good Cosmetic Surgeon in the City

Finding a Good Cosmetic Surgeon in the CityRecent study show a spike in cosmetic procedures conducted in metropolitan areas, especially in the East Coast. Cosmetic surgeries can be risky at times, but you have to take the pros with the cons. However, due to lack of research and poor judgement, many people that opt for cosmetic procedures only reap the negative effects of plastic surgery at the hands of inexperienced or phony doctors.

It can be quite difficult to discern a good doctor from a bad one, especially in metropolitan areas. Why? Cities tend to have a lot much more options. Although it’s great to have a variety of options, it can take time to sift through them, and many times, rather than consider researching all available options, some people just throw in the towel and go with the doctor that has the best commercials or appealing billboards.

It’s with research that people can decrease the risk of malpractice. In cities like Baltimore, Philadelphia and New York City, it’s absolutely critical to do your research when it comes to finding the right plastic surgeon for you. It can be a little intimidating sifting through all your options, but it’s for the best. Here are a few tips that can help you pick out the right surgeon for you:

Gathering Candidates

The first thing you’ll want to do is gather the names of potential candidates. You can generate these results by researching websites, testimonials or even asking your friends, family, doctor or a nurse. Referrals like these can help you build a solid list of doctors with a good reputation. You can also look through special directories. For example, if you happen to live in Baltimore, you may want to use tools like the Maryland Board of Physicians website to find a cosmetic plastic surgeon in Baltimore.

Check Credentials

There’s been horror stories of supposed doctors not properly injecting botox and collagen, leaving their patients scared for life. A licensed doctor knows how to administer these injections, so be wary of people that claim to be licensed professionals. You can research a plastic surgeon’s credentials by logging onto the American Board of Plastic Surgery. Their credentials and record is a matter of public record, and therefore, easy to find.

Reputation

A good doctor will most likely have a great reputation, so make sure you research public records and media clips (articles and videos) that verify your doctor’s career history and status.

The Consultation

When you meet a potential candidate for your surgery, make sure to ask if he/she has hospital privileges (hospitals conduct extensive background checks on doctors) and what kind of training they’ve received. Always ask where and how the surgery will be performed, what the risks and side effects are, and how many times he/she has done that specific procedure.

Ideally, you’ll want to find a plastic surgeon that specializes in cases like yours. It’s recommended that you visit at least five doctors before choosing one. Be sure to take a friend or family member with you to the consultation. That way, if you forget to ask something, they can ask for you.

Know The Risks

You have to know the risks involved with the surgery. Sometimes, patients want to bundle their surgeries in order to recuperate faster. However, bundling surgeries increases your risks significantly. Bundling your surgeries is also very expensive, and sometimes unethical doctors may not warn you about potential risks in order to get the most amount of compensation. Make sure your doctor is being honest with you. If you need to, ask for a second opinion.

It’s very important to do your research if you’re planning on undergoing a plastic surgery, therefore, make sure you have a good candidate pool and an honest, licensed professional with a good reputation. This way, you can significantly lower your risks of choosing a bad plastic surgeon in the city.
