kitchen sinkAs homeowners, we frequently take the plumbing under our sinks for granted until a problem occurs that causes inconvenience or even worse, damage. Plumbing issues with sinks can cause disruptions to our daily routines, whether it is due to a broken garbage disposal, a clogged drain, or a leaky faucet. However, with a bit of knowledge and the right tools, many of these issues can be resolved without the need to call a professional plumber in Cortland, OH.

In this blog post, our professionals from Mr. Rooter Plumbing will present eight common sink plumbing issues and how to fix them.

Leaky Faucet

Not only does a leaky faucet waste water, but it might eventually result in higher electricity costs. First, shut off the water supply beneath the sink in order to resolve this problem. To get to the cartridge or O-ring, disassemble the faucet handle. Check for wear or damage on these parts, and replace them as needed. Lastly, put the faucet back together and turn on the water supply again to look for leaks.

Clogged Drain

A common inconvenience is a clogged sink drain, which can be brought on by a buildup of hair, grease, or food particles. Try using a plunger or a drain snake to break up the obstruction in order to unclog the drain. Baking soda and vinegar can also be used to make a natural drain cleaning. If none of these work, you might need to use a chemical drain cleaner or remove the trap; nevertheless, proceed with caution and think about calling a plumber if the obstruction doesn’t go away.

Slow Draining Sink

Your sink can have a partial clog deeper down the pipe if the water is draining slowly. To begin, unscrew the drain stopper and examine the drain for any obvious obstructions using a flashlight. After that, you can attempt to clear the clog with a plunger or a drain snake. Should the issue continue, there might be a more significant plumbing problem that needs to be fixed by a professional.

Garbage Disposal Jam

Although a jammed garbage disposal can be annoying, it’s usually an easy fix. To prevent any mishaps, first shut off the disposal’s electricity. Next, manually rotate the disposal’s motor shaft with an Allen wrench to loosen the obstruction. Restart the disposal with water after the jam has been cleared to make sure it is operating correctly.

Low Water Pressure

Numerous things, such as mineral accumulation in the aerator or a broken shut-off valve, can lead to low water pressure in the sink. To get rid of any debris, remove the aerator and soak it in vinegar. Make sure the shut-off valve under the sink is fully open if trying this doesn’t increase the water pressure. To have the water flowing properly again, replace the valve if needed.

Noisy Pipes

Your sink pipes may be making loud banging or rattling sounds because of loose or incorrectly fastened pipes. Look beneath the sink for any loose brackets or connections, and tighten them if necessary. To lessen vibration and noise, you can also install pipe insulation.

Foul Odors

Decomposing food particles or organic matter stuck in the drain are the main source of foul sink scents. Pour a solution of vinegar and baking soda down the drain, let it stay for a few hours, and then flush with hot water to get rid of the smells. To stop food particles from going down the drain, you can also consider installing a drain strainer or utilizing a commercial drain cleaner.

Rusty or Corroded Pipes

If neglected, rusted or corroded pipes may eventually result in leaks or other plumbing issues. Inspect the pipes under the sink for any signs of corrosion or rust, paying particular attention to joints and fittings. To stop future deterioration, it is best to repair the damaged pipes as soon as you see any damage.
