5 Simple Tips for Making Your House Feel Like a Home

home exteriorThere is a big difference between a place that you go to rest every night and a living space that you can feel truly at home in. While a house is just a building, your home is your sanctuary: the place you can escape too after a long, stressful day at work and where you can unwind with your family. In order for a house to really become a home, you need to take the time to cultivate a warm, comfortable living environment by adding in some personal touches and furnishings which will make the space feel like your own. If you’re unsure of the sorts of finishing touches you’d like to add to your home, here are some ideas to help inspire you.

Make your bedroom your sanctuary

Your bedroom should always be the most inviting space in your home, as that is the room you go to for rest and recuperation. The more comfortable your space is, the easier and more deeply you are likely to sleep. Making small changes such as using a hypoallergenic mattress for your bed, adding darker curtains or choosing softer bedding will make a big difference to the look and feel of your home. Additionally, you might find it beneficial to choose colors for your bedroom that promote sleep, such as shades of blue and purple.

Place artwork around your home

Art may not seem like the biggest priority in a home, but bare walls can make a house seem emotionless and lacking personality. Adding artwork to your home will help to lift the mood in even the darkest of rooms, and create a space that feels much warmer. Creative work can also help to reduce feelings of stress, which is important in areas of the house where you would like to relax, such as your living room or bedroom.

Add throws and cushions

Adding soft furnishings will help turn even the most uncomfortable, coldest looking furniture into a much more inviting living space. The use of throws and cushions is particularly useful for making a space feel more lavish even on a tight budget, as you don’t have to buy expensive furniture to create a comfortable seating area.

Bring the outdoors in

Plants and flowers are renowned for their ability to positively affect mood and stress. Moreover, they are also wonderful additions to any home to bring cleaner air, freshness, and natural color. While some house plants can be slightly more complicated to look after, there are plenty of plants which take minimal care and attention while still bringing a garden-fresh atmosphere to the home, such as peace lilies and succulents.

Introduce as much natural light as possible

Bringing light into your home is important, as the darker a house feels, the less inviting the atmosphere will be. On the other hand, the wrong type of light can also be oppressive: florescent lights may increase the brightness of the home, but they also create an off-putting harsh light and waste a lot of energy in the process. Therefore, the more natural, soft light you can create with the use of mirrors and bright wall colors to reflect the light, the better for the look and feel of your home.
