outdoor toilet basicsThe choice of whether you should use a indoor or outdoor toilet comes to individual preference. Sometimes, the latter can be economical. It does not require a lot of maintenance, especially if it does not use the flush system.

An outdoor toilet consists of a building or enclosure with a toilet seat and a hole where all the waste falls. This type is common in developing countries and rural areas of developed countries as well.

When building this type of enclosure, there are certain elements that you require to keep in mind. Our article today focuses on some essential basics you should have to ensure that you remain healthy as you opt for this type of toilet.

  1. Maintain a safe distance

Unlike the indoor plumbing system, outdoor bathrooms can be tricky to build. By the way, they are beneficial to people who have problems with spaces in their houses or people who are always on the move.

Because of odor, it is vital that you keep it farther to your main property. It is also wise that you keep it away from water source channels, especially for pit latrines.

For mobile or bucket toilets, it would not be an issue; however, the compost bin should be at a safe distance from water sources and the likes.

  1. Prioritize comfort

While you are busy in the toilet, you always desire comfortability.

Ensure that the enclosure is stable enough. It ensures that you enjoy your privacy, and the

odor does not come out of the chamber. By the way, the smell is dangerous because it can attract insects.

You should also include a light which you could use at night in case you will require using it at night.

  1. Proper in house rules matter

If you have visitors into your home, the best thing you can do is to put up signs inside the toilet. Such signs come in handy mainly because you want to avoid careless use for such toilet.

For instance, you could encourage them to keep the toilet when using it, cover the lid after use, washing your hands after finishing your business, or you could place a sanitizer in case

you do not have a sink.

Sometimes, when you have so many new users, it can be problematic when it comes to maintaining hygiene.

  1. Dumping the waste

For a pit latrine, you can empty it of the toilet is full or you could resort to building a new structure in a new location.

When it comes to a mobile toilet or a bucket toilet, they fill up quicker than the pit latrine. Therefore, you have to have the right dumping bags, which should also be environment-friendly.

When throwing the waste, make sure that you do not throw it near edible foods.

  1. Build it properly

Aside from maintaining distance and ensuring that you come up with a stable structure, it is crucial that you select a suitable location away from a fence or wild plants. Areas such as these can be a suitable hiding spot for animals, for instance, snakes.

If you do not have enough space, make sure that you keep plants from getting into the room because they can attract insects such as spiders and wasps.

Some people prefer building the structure by themselves. Nonetheless, you can call reputable professionals who can do the job for you.

Final thoughts

A good tip when handing the compost is to wear protective gear such as gloves. Some people say that it is safe to handle it without gloves; on the other hand, It can be dangerous when managing a huge crowd’s waste.
