4 Steps to Take When Adopting a Dog

Dog Breeds prone to illnessIf you feel ready to adopt a dog, you will likely want to avoid various mistakes along the way. After all, it is crucial that the canine you choose matches your personality and must suit your lifestyle and level of commitment.

Make the right choice for your family and avoid various pitfalls by checking out the following four steps to take when adopting a dog.

Step One: Research the Best Shelters and Dog Rescues

If you are eager to provide a dog with a second chance at a great life, you should adopt one from either a shelter or dog rescue. A dog rescue is often more thorough than a shelter, as you will need to visit multiple times before the adoption is finalized. However, as shelters will often need space to house more pets, the adoption process is a little quicker compared to a dog rescue.

Whatever option you choose, perform research to find the best shelters and dog rescues in your town or city. Then, look for a shelter or dog rescue that will aim to match a pet with the correct family.

Step Two: Select the Right Personality

Don’t make the mistake of picking the first dog that pulls at your heartstrings at a shelter or rescue. If you do, you could adopt a low-energy pooch that doesn’t match your active, busy lifestyle. Instead, you must perform in-depth research to find dog breeds that suit your personality.

For example, if you want to welcome a calm, quiet canine to suit your laidback lifestyle, you may need to adopt a more relaxed dog, such as a Cavalier King Charles Spaniel or a Clumber Spaniel. Yet, you must bear in mind that each dog has its own personality that could be outside the norm for a specific breed.

Step Three: Prepare Your Home

Once you have identified the best breeds and shelters, you must prep your home for your new canine’s arrival. While searching for the perfect pooch, you can begin puppy-proofing your property from top to bottom by:

  • Removing loose cables and wires
  • Locking away cleaning products, medicines, and other toxins
  • Ensuring foods are out of reach
  • Hiding your trash
  • Removing poisonous houseplants
  • Safely store away batteries, key fobs, and remote controls

Take a walk through your home to identify products or areas that could pose a risk to your new puppy or adult dog.

Step Four: Stock Up on Essential Dog Products

There are various products you will need to buy before bringing home a dog. For example, you must buy:

  • Dog food
  • A crate
  • A collar
  • Grooming supplies
  • Food and water bowls
  • A dog bed
  • Toys
  • Treats
  • A leash
  • Flea prevention products
  • A pet gate

Remember, different dogs will have different dietary requirements. If you are unsure about a breed’s needs, talk to a qualified vet for advice. Buying the correct food in advance will ensure your dog enjoys a healthy, happy start in its new home.

It is also necessary to pay attention to the selection of a full, properly balanced diet. Here you can find high-quality dog arthritis supplements. Be kind and attentive to your pet, because he needs you so much. And he will definitely thank you for such care, becoming a loyal and reliable friend for you.
