1. Switch Your Light Bulbs

Swapping out your light bulbs is a simple change that can make a huge difference in the environment and your wallet. If you’re like 80% of American households, you most likely have incandescent light bulbs in your home. However, these bulbs are extremely inefficient, converting less than 5% of energy into visible light. This means that the remaining 95% is lost as heat, which will cause your house to heat up and trigger your air conditioner to work even harder. To fix this problem, consider switching to LED bulbs. LEDs are becoming increasingly popular due to their efficiency, sustainability and long life of 100,000 hours, as compared to an incandescent bulb’s 1,000.

2. Use Eco-Friendly Beauty Products

If you’ve recently taken a look at your makeup products, you may have found toxic ingredients such as parabens, phthalates and lead. Not only are these ingredients harmful to the environment, but they’re also bad for your health. Parabens have been linked to an increased risk of breast cancer, while phthalates have been linked to a whole host of diseases, including obesity, diabetes and neurodevelopmental issues. Because these dangerous chemicals can’t be broken down, they can contribute to air pollution and harm aquatic life by infiltrating the water supply. Consider switching to sustainable beauty products, which are formulated without artificial ingredients and preservatives. Purchasing these products can ensure that toxic ingredients aren’t released into the environment, further contributing to air and water pollution. Not only are sustainable beauty products better for the environment, but they’re also better for your skin, as traditional beauty products can often cause irritation or allergic reactions. 3. Cut Down on Energy Use in Your Home

Not only can washing your clothes in cold water eliminate up to 1,600 pounds of carbon dioxide a year, but it can also help your clothes last longer by preventing faded colors and shrinking.

4. Eat Less Meat

Although meat can be a tasty meal, eating it frequently can have adverse environmental effects. To make space for cattle ranching, many farmers intentionally burn down forests, which releases billions of tons of carbon dioxide into the atmosphere and contributes to an increase in greenhouse gases and global warming. Furthermore, clearing forests destroys many species’ habitats and can lead to extinction. However, don’t worry if you love meat. While eliminating meat completely would be ideal, simply cutting down on meat consumption only one or two times a week is enough to have positive effects on the environment and your health. Eating less meat is associated with greater heart health and a reduced risk of diabetes.

5. Recycle

One of the more obvious ways to live a more sustainable lifestyle is to recycle as much as you can. You might be surprised by exactly how much you can recycle.     Good suggestions! May I also suggest installing eco-friendly plumbing fixtures? For example, a high-efficiency toilet. Older toilets can use up to 7 gallons a flush. Most high-efficiency toilets use only 1.5 gallons of water per flush or even less. Not only do you help the planet by installing such items but also reduce your water bills.

    Thank you for such an informative article! Since the cold months are coming, I’d like to share some tips on how to make the heating system work the most efficiently. First of all, remember to replace air filters regularly. Also, seal any cracks where hot or cold air could seep through, and ensure that heater pipes and ductwork are adequately insulated to keep your energy expenses from ballooning.
