3 Tips to Overcome the Challenges of Transition to Adulthood

happyThe passage into adulthood has forever been a major turning point in a person’s life. But for today’s young adults, it presents a complex and often overwhelming challenge.

The old-school playbook of finishing school, getting a job, and settling down right away is gone. Now, the journey to adulthood is a much longer, more zigzagging road with a lot more question marks.

Young adults today are dealing with a storm of pressures, from student debt to mental health, that previous generations simply didn’t have to.

The good news? You don’t need to have everything figured out overnight.

These four practical tips from HealthyVoyager will help you navigate this phase of life with more confidence and less stress.

#1 Master Everyday Life Skills

They didn’t teach this stuff in school. But mastering everyday skills is the perfect antidote to the anxiety, low self-esteem, and feelings of inadequacy that characterize this period.

When a young adult learns to confidently manage their own environment, they directly counter the feelings of helplessness that can be so paralyzing.

Getting a handle on your living space creates a stable foundation for everything else. Learn basic cooking skills and move beyond a diet of instant ramen and takeout.

Beginning With Baby Steps to End Up a Master

Excellent starting points include one-pot meals, which minimize cleanup and complexity. Simple casseroles, often requiring only a few affordable ingredients, can provide multiple meals with a single effort.

Incorrectly washing clothes can be a frustrating and expensive mistake. Always read the garment’s care tag, which provides specific instructions on water temperature and cycle settings. Separate them by color to prevent dyes from bleeding.

It’s also important to stay on top of small home repairs. This is a great way to prevent them from turning into big, expensive headaches later on.

#2 Prioritize Your Mental Health

The transition to adulthood brings unique stressors that previous generations didn’t always acknowledge. This is why taking care of your mental health isn’t selfish, but important.

Physical activity and a balanced diet are powerful natural antidepressants and anti-anxiety tools. Finding creative outlets, such as art or writing, can also help manage stress. If you miss out on self-care, there are chances that you might fall into illicit drug use to numb your feelings.

Unfortunately, when support is lacking, some young adults turn to drugs to cope.

Arizona, for example, ranks among the worst states for youth mental health care. According to Purpose Healing Center, a shortage of professionals and limited coverage leaves many without access to proper care.

As a result, untreated mental health issues lead to substance use, especially with fentanyl use rising. Each year, teens in Scottsdale, Arizona, tragically pass away from fatal opioid overdose.

Reaching Out for Support is Paramount

If you’re struggling, you don’t have to go through it alone. Accredited behavioral health facilities in Scottsdale offer safe spaces for healing.

These facilities offer real therapy and personalized care. You’ll find people who get it and want to help you get better.

Residential or inpatient mental health treatment programs are especially helpful when you are in need of intense therapy to rebuild your life.

In general, patients live on-site in residential mental health treatment programs, which means they are supervised 24/7. Besides receiving personalized care, they connect with others facing similar struggles.

#3 Learn to Budget

Perhaps no aspect of the transition to adulthood causes more anxiety than personal finance.

A high cost of living and soaring home prices are making it difficult for young adults to navigate the economic landscape.

There is also the crushing weight of student loan debt. A survey found that nearly two-thirds (64%) of young adults with a college degree took out student loans. Of that group, the vast majority (81%) were still paying off their debt at the time.

A ‘Golden’ Ratio and Other Tips for Budgeting Success

The 50/30/20 rule offers a simple, flexible framework to get started. This budgeting method divides your net income as follows: 50% for needs, 30% for wants, and 20% for savings and debt repayment.

Beyond the budget, establish an emergency fund. Data show that 4 in 10 Americans struggle to cover an unplanned $400 expense. The key to building this fund is saving a small amount each time. You can automate the process by setting up regular, automatic transfers from a checking account to a dedicated savings account.

Equally important is building credit from scratch. The principles are pretty straightforward. Pay every bill on time and keep credit utilization low.

The Importance of Patience on the Path to Adulthood

The transition to adulthood isn’t a finish line you cross; it’s a journey you’re on. It’s okay to feel overwhelmed, and it’s okay not to have it all figured out. Just focus on these tips and you’ll be on the right track.

You’ll mess up sometimes and feel lost now and then. But be patient with yourself. You are learning and growing every day, and you must give credit where credit is due. To borrow a saying from the recovery community: “It’s about progress, not perfection.”
