Starting this weekend, there will be lots of grillin’ and lots of chillin’! But that’s no reason to slack off on your green living. In fact, it’s the perfect time to get in to some good, green summer time habits! Especially when it comes to parties and outdoor cooking!
- Green Grilling – A solar powered grill is the most eco-friendly way to grill, but if that’s not an option for, opt for a natural gas grill instead of a charcoal one as it burns cleaner. And if you don’t have an outdoor space, invest in an indoor grill or a nice grill pan!
- Local and Organic Food and Beverage – Always opt for fresh, local ingredients for your cookouts and parties. And if you can find it, choose organic. It’s greener as well as healthier! This goes for everything from your food to your booze!
- Sustainable Serving – Choose biodegradable or compostable dishes, napkins and utensils. This way you are sure to fill up our landfills with gross disposable crap that will never break down. Or you can add it to your compost pile (tip to come!). Another tip is to ask folks to bring their own reusable dishes, utensils and cups!
- Make recycling easy – Be sure to have clearly marked and accessible recycle bins at your party. Otherwise, folks a liable to toss everything in the trash.
- Compost – Compost leftover food scraps & other organic trash and create good healthy soil to grow your own local, organic food!
- Keep your parties local – With high gas prices, traveling to far to get to a party can be costly both to you as well as the earth. Find ways to carpool and/or keep the festivities close to home!
Make this summer greener then ever!
