How Foster Carers Can Plan a Successful First Road Trip in Scotland

urquhart-castle-healthy-voyager-scotlandOne of the greatest ways to holiday in the summer months is to pack up the car and head off on a fun road trip. Road trips allow you to explore areas near and far, even discovering sights and attractions you weren’t aware of. If you’re a foster carer in Scotland and this is the first road trip you will be taking your foster child on, there are some tips to use to ensure it’s a success. So, let’s take a closer look.

Go Easy On the Itinerary

One of the biggest mistakes people make when planning a road trip is setting the bar too high when it comes to how many places you plan to visit. If you over-pack the itinerary, it becomes quite busy and stressful, which is the opposite of fun. Depending on how young your foster child is, you may also be setting unrealistic expectations.

Ideally, you want to create a route that is flexible, meaning you can take a little more or less time at each stop. Map out where you want to start and finish each day, book accommodation for that location, and try to leave the rest more casual. You can create a list of interesting places and then decide that day what you want to do.

Pack Activities for the Car Ride

While you may be entertained by the sights along the way, kids don’t always feel the same. Looking out the window can be interesting for a little bit, but it won’t keep them engaged all day long. This is why you’ll want to pack car-friendly activities. This can include things such as colouring books and crayons, hand-held gaming devices or streaming devices, books, word search books, travel-sized board games, and anything else that may keep your foster child happy.

Make Stops Every Couple of Hours

Despite the fact that you may want to cover a lot of ground each day, you need to factor in frequent stops. These are the opportunity for everyone to get out of the car, stretch their legs, use the toilet and just feel a bit more refreshed for the next leg of the journey.

Choose Fun Car-Friendly Snacks

Packing snacks and beverages is a must-have when going on a road trip, but in this case, you’ll want to be sure you choose fun car-friendly items. These are items that won’t make a huge mess, are easy to eat, and provide the energy kids need. Try to skip the high-sugar snacks as these won’t fill your foster child up, and they offer no nutritional value.

Check to See If You Are Part of a Rewards Platform

If you are looking to save money, be sure to check if your foster agency has a rewards platform. Discounts on experiences and at shops across the UK are something Foster Care Associates Scotland offers its foster carers. These types of savings can ensure that the road trip stays within budget.

These are simple tips and tricks you can use that will help ensure everyone has a blast on the road trip.
