Adding more warmth and color to your garden: A guide

Natural History Museum Staycation on Healthy VoyagerColor is an incredible thing. Whether it’s on a canvas, the clothes we choose to wear, or transforming a dull and lifeless garden into a stunning space that’s warm and inviting, the right combination of color choices can accomplish pretty much anything.

Not only can it redefine a garden space, but it can also completely change how we perceive that garden, and how it makes us feel when we spend time there! Here are a few hints and tips to add more color to your garden.

Choose your colors wisely

Before you go wild and get creative in your garden, it’s essential that you’ve considered which colors are going to be used, and why you’ve chosen them. Are you hoping to instill calm and inner peace with your color choices? Or perhaps you’re aiming for coziness and comfort?

Then, expand on your choices for making your garden look beautiful. Plants and trees aren’t the only ways to do this! For example, there’s easy to grow ruby loropetalum, which is an evergreen rounded bush, that offers smaller gardens the chance to showcase stunning pink flowers against deep red leaves.

Don’t overwhelm people with too many colors

When you have chosen those key colors, think of your garden as a canvas and those plants as the paints you’ve chosen. They should work well together, complement each other, and exude warmth, calmness, and beauty.

But like all works of art, too many colors can completely ruin what may have been the perfect painting. So, while contrasting colors are perfectly fine, it’s important to stick to simple but effective colors that create harmony between the space and the plants you’re using.

Embrace the benefits of accessorizing your garden

Instead of potentially overwhelming your guests with too many colors and themes, make use of some of the more subtle ways of getting your garden as welcoming, warm, and colorful as possible.

Mirrors, cloths, cushions, candles, and bunting are all extremely effective ways of giving those dominant garden colors a little more depth and accessorizing to make the space more inviting.

Add brightness to the boundaries

Many people focus on the plants and trees but forget how powerful and attractive a colorful backdrop can be. A well-painted fence, a shed, or trellis can accentuate the colors of your plants and add warmth or comfort to an otherwise drab and uninviting place.

Remember that while choosing the best plants possible is essential, it’s not just about what you grow in your garden. An inviting space should exude warmth in its boundaries too!

Be creative with your pots

If you’re limited by the amount of space you have for plants to grow, then a few strategically placed pots can help to add a little more flourish to your plot. They’re ideal for placing on steps or corners to add a fresh and fun dimension to your garden.

Stick to one color, but have several sizes of pots in that color. Be sure that the color you choose complements your core colors and adds to your overall garden composition, instead of making it confusing and cluttered.
