Self-Storage Tips for Your Next Move

tips on moving to another cityDid you know that in the U.S. alone, about 40 million people move each year? So many more end up traveling abroad for an extended period of time. But, whether you’re making a permanent move or taking a long trip, there’s one thing you will undoubtedly need; a storage unit.

Long-distance moving is difficult enough on its own. While hiring a moving company can help with the heavy lifting, finding a place to store your belongings while you’re away is just as important to give you peace of mind.

But, not all storage units or companies are created equally.

With that in mind, let’s cover a few helpful self-storage tips you can use the next time you need a unit. By utilizing these tips, you can feel confident that you’re choosing the right unit and preparing yourself to keep things stored away.

What to Look For in a Storage Unit

When you’re trying to decide on a self-storage unit, the most important thing is feeling confident that your belongings will stay safe.

So, what should you be looking for, specifically?

First, consider a few crucial factors:

  • Where is the unit located? Is it in a safe neighborhood? Is it easy to get to?
  • What is the quality of the unit and the business?
  • What was the business’ customer service like?
  • Are there any security features for the unit or the property?

When you feel safe and comfortable about a unit located in a secure area, you can move on to focusing on a storage unit that fits your needs. What size do you need to fit all of your belongings? How often will you need to access it? Are there things you’re storing that need to be in a climate-controlled environment?

Remember, putting things in a storage unit means you’ll be getting them out at some point. You’ll want to do everything within your power to make sure your things remain in pristine condition.

How to Prepare Your Belongings for Storage

In addition to finding a unit you can trust, it’s your responsibility to make sure your belongings are properly packed.

Stock up on cardboard boxes, but make sure you also have packing materials that will keep things protected, including styrofoam, packing peanuts, and tape.

If you really want to protect your things, invest in plastic storage bins, rather than cardboard boxes. Plastic bins will ensure that your belongings stay dry, and they can take on more wear and tear without anything getting damaged.

Pack strategically, no matter what type of vessel you use. Keep similar items together so they’re easy to find, and make sure you’re not putting anything heavy on top of breakable items.

The last thing you should have to worry about when you’re moving or traveling is whether or not your possessions are safe in a storage unit. So, don’t be afraid to do your research, take the time to pack properly, and you’ll be rewarded with everything properly in its place when you’re ready to retrieve it again.

I agree that you should check out the storage center’s customer service record. I need to get a unit for my bikes this winter. I’ll have to make sure my unit is climate-controlled.

You make a great point about packing strategically according to the space available. I need to get a storage unit for my winter coats. I just can’t store them in my house.

I like your storage tips. I need to get a unit. That way I can store extra clothes.

You made a good point when you shared that it is great to find a place to store your belongings while you’re away so it can give you peace of mind. My friend just mentioned the other day that she is going to move to another house which is located in another state but she could not take all her items during the moving day. I will suggest to her looking for a reliable self-storage facility where she can keep her belongings safely.
