How to Keep Your Vertical Blinds in Clean and Hygienic Conditions

Windows are a portal to the world beyond the walls of the house. They let you in on all that is happening outside while you remain in the comfort of your own home. Unfortunately, it’s a two-way street: the outside world can also view the world inside. Panes and shutters mitigate some of that problem, but not like blinds, especially vertical ones.

Vertical blinds can be called to stand in line and perform their duty of blocking the outside view as long as required. In doing that, externalities like dust and pollution can cover them up and mar their look, sometimes even functionality. That can be helped by performing regular cleanups with the help of specific methods and guidelines on platforms like https://cleanhomeguide.co.uk/how-to-clean-vertical-blinds/.

Brush Dusting and Vacuuming

Remove loosely held dust with a furry duster. Gently stroke every blind starting from the top and progress downward. This must be done to either of the sides. Cloths and brushes must be avoided as they merely push the dust instead of picking them off.

Once that’s done, use the vacuum cleaner with the provided brush attachment. Place a blind in one hand and gradually run the other hand with the vacuum brush in strokes similar to the duster ones. Repeating this weekly will keep those blinds dust-free and shining for a long time.

Soap Water Spot Cleaning

This is particularly useful for spot stains that can be rather hard to remove using the previous method and materials like plastic/vinyl and cloth.

Mix a few drops of liquid soap in a bowl full of water thoroughly until it becomes soapy. Solid soaps can be used but tend to not be for this purpose and can leave unwanted residues as it’s challenging to get the exact quantity to mix. Dip a microfiber cloth in the soap mixture and give it a good wringing to eliminate the excess water.

Perform a similar top-down motion, as in the previous example. Avoid using harsh strokes and scrubbing. Else, the fibres of the cloth will break and stick to the blind. Later, the blinds must be cleaned with another wet cloth till the soapy feel is gone. They must then be left to air dry.

Bathing in the Tub

This method is good mainly for plastic/vinyl blinds. Only some fabric blinds allow for this, so it’s good to verify before proceeding.

Clean the dust off each using a microfiber cloth or a duster, as in the previous examples. Carefully remove each blind from its hook and place it in the bathtub. They can be cleaned in unison or a few at a time. Close the drain of the tub and fill it with warm water. Then mix some soap/cleaner liquid in it and create a mixture as in the previous method. Leave the blinds entirely soaked in it for about an hour.

After they’re done, drain the water and dry the blinds individually by placing them on a towel and gently cleaning them with a dry microfiber cloth. Leave it on the towel for about two hours to dry.

Tumbling In the Washer

Running the blinds through a washing machine is also a good option, especially with fiber blinds. Others have to be checked before washing.

Place the blinds in a cloth container like a pillowcase or cloth-based laundry bag and seal it tight. This prevents the edges from scratching the innards of the machine or getting caught there. Pour some gentle washing liquid and set the mode to delicate with warm water. Once done, spread them out on a table, preferably over a dry towel, and let them dry before hooking them up again.

Following a guide to clean your vertical blinds will render them shiny and hygienic. This will keep them performing well, and you will be free from any health and image problems they might cause.
