If you think a trip to the home counties of England might not be the most exciting place to have a short break, then you’re in for a surprise – there are so many things to do if you have a few days to explore the area. As a base for your first visit here, head to Surrey.
With great connections to London and the rest of the UK, plus a fantastic mix of arts and culture attractions, you will have a fun and fulfilling few days in Surrey. If you want to get in touch with nature, or learn more about British history, here are some of the places you must add to your itinerary.
Weybridge
Weybridge is home to one of the most famous places to visit in Surrey: Brooklands Museum. This motoring and aviation museum – at the site of the former Brooklands race track – aims to conserve, protect and interpret the unique heritage of this iconic place.
Feeling peckish after your day at the museum? You can make your way to one of the local gastro pubs, such as theflintgate.co.uk to refuel. Pick one of the tasty meals on offer that’s been created using fresh, local produce – then maybe try one of the beers or real ales on offer as you enjoy the cosy atmosphere.
Richmond
You can pass a good few hours wandering in Richmond Park – no trip to Surrey is complete without a walk around it. One of the most popular attractions are the famous deer, roaming this Royal Park since 1529. These deer have also played their part in the park’s history as much as the landscape. If you’re lucky, you’ll get to see some of the more than 600 deer who live there.
Alongside the beautiful animals, there are many special places in Richmond Park, like the Isabella Plantation woodland garden. There are a number of trails you can follow and explore, too. You’d be surprised at how far away the stresses of everyday life can feel when you’re walking in nature!
Dorking
This market town in the Surrey Hills has a number of Georgian and Victorian period manor houses, just a few minutes away. All these places were intended to take advantage of the beautiful views of the chalk downs.
These views are covered by yew forests, as well as fields scattered with wildflowers in the early months of summer. Box Hill, which formed part of the road cycling route for the 2012 Olympics, offers one of the best panoramas in southern England.
Guildford
Guildford, on the River Wey, was a historically important trade point between London and Portsmouth. There are a number of sites you can explore in the town, including Guildford Cathedral with its stunning nave, and the historic Guildford Castle. After that, you could spend time enjoying the shops and restaurants or use Guildford as your base to explore the Surrey Hills – an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty.
