Whether it’s time to make the big change now the kids have flown the nest, or you simply think you want to set up shop somewhere different, you need to think carefully about your choice.
You need to almost over-plan for this kind of move so that when you get to your dream home everything can fall into place and you can enjoy yourself!
Not sure where to start? Here are the top three things to consider when you’re moving somewhere new.
1. The Necessities
First things first: scope out the area and check that it has all the necessary amenities nearby.
Let’s say you are thinking of moving to beautiful Calgary in Canada. You need to find the nearest hospital, dental practice, and schools and colleges for your children. These searches can be as simple as looking up something like “dentistry in the valley” online and comparing your options.
You can then get super pedantic but very prepared for your move. Take a trip to the country you’re moving to, and practice the drive between your chosen house and school or hospital. Visit them all – looking at them online doesn’t give you a true insight. After all, you’d never buy a house without viewing it first. From there, you can ensure that your family are safe and have access to medical care whenever they might need it.
Another good idea, if you are of the older generation or have a medical condition, is to check where your medications are available in the country and how much it might cost you. Looking into insurance in advance is always a smart idea.
2. The Climate
Let’s face it – most of us (who don’t already live in them) have dreamed of moving to warmer climes. It just seems to offer a better way of life and a happier disposition.
If you’re retiring to the south of France or Florida where the weather stays pretty toasty, you should ensure that your prospective accommodation is equipped with aircon and fans. You don’t want to end up in a sun-trap with no respite!
Or, perhaps you are moving somewhere where the weather is unpredictable; like some parts of Europe and the UK. In that case, you will need to make sure that your house has all the safety features to ward against storms, floods or snow.
Where ever you plan to move, take a moment to think about the fact you are going to live there, and will need to be prepared for all it throws at you.
3. The Area
This is hugely important and needs to be a priority on your list. You don’t want to be unintentionally moving your young family into a dodgy neighborhood.
When looking at homes, it’s worth taking a vacation out to the country and talking to the locals in areas you’re considering living. Visit local real estate agents and have conversations about where they think is best, considering your family, career and preferences. While viewing properties, be sure to talk to the neighbors and locals to get a real feel for the place.
In the property world, things are never as good as they are on paper (or photos online). Get some hands-on experience and a gut feeling for the area to be sure you’re making a good move.
In Conclusion
A big move is a big choice, and, no matter what, there is a chance things might not go entirely to plan.
But, when you plan properly and think it all through very carefully, you can minimize any issues.
Consider all outcomes, and plan everything down to a T, but also… enjoy the journey!
