5 Air Conditioner Tips and Tricks

air conditionerAn air conditioner helps in keeping high temperatures at bay during summer. Without such an appliance, your home would feel like an oven. With proper maintenance, your air conditioner can offer you the best performance for many years. If you don’t take good care of your air conditioner you will definitely not feel comfortable even when the appliance is up and running. Besides that, you will have to pay a higher utility bill at the end of the month. Fortunately, there are things you can do to avoid such shortcomings. Here is a list of tips and tricks you can use to utilize an air conditioner.

  1. Get a Programmable Thermostat

If you usually have a busy schedule, you can easily forget to turn the thermostat on and off. In fact, thermostats that have to be operated manually are not efficient. This is because you have to wait until you return home to turn them either on or off. With such an outdated model, you have to wait for some time for it to rise to the occasion. A programmable thermostat on the other hand is very reliable because it’s designed to turn itself on and off automatically. All you have to do is set the temperatures that should trigger the on and off button. With such a thermostat, you can be sure you will come home and experience a cool breeze when the sun is sizzling hot.

  1. Inspect the Filter

Every air conditioner is usually equipped with a filter that prevents dust and debris from accessing its inner chamber. You should actually inspect the filter every few months. But you should do it more often during summer because that’s when the air is dustier. If the filter appears clogged, it’s important you replace it with another one immediately. Retaining a clogged filter will only hurt your pockets as it will cause the air conditioner to use more energy which in return will leave you with a huge utility bill.

  1. Clean the Vents and Clear Bushes

Cleaning the vents helps in ensuring that air from the air conditioner flows smoothly into your home. If you allow dirty vents to persist, you are at risk of breathing in the contaminants that can trigger certain diseases and allergies. Besides that, cleaner vents help in saving the energy that’s used by the air conditioner. Keep in mind that dirty vents cause the AC to use more power to push fresh air into the house. You should also clear the bushes that are close to the external unit to make sure their leaves don’t end up in the filter chamber.

  1. Insulate Doors and Windows

When there are gaps on the windows and doors, the AC will not be able to tame the high temperatures. This is because most of the cool air will escape through such gaps. In fact, you will have to keep the air conditioner turned on most of the time to achieve the desired room temperature. This will also cause your utility bill to skyrocket. By insulating the doors and windows, the air conditioner will be able to counter the high temperatures within a short time. This is because the cool breeze will be retained in the room for a long time.

  1. Buy a New Air Conditioner

If you realize that your air conditioner keeps breaking down every now and then, it’s advisable you budget for a new model. Lest you forget, air conditioners also wear out with time just like other electrical appliances. As a matter of fact, replacing the parts can be costly in the long run, especially if the appliance has to be serviced frequently. Newer models of air conditioners actually come with advanced features that make them more efficient and convenient. Before making a purchase, first read this article for information.
