Things to Remember If Traveling to Canada for the First Time

There are several reasons to visit Canada. This North American country has warm and friendly people, and its great outdoors gives you plenty of activities to try including camping, kayaking, mountain climbing, fishing and more. If you are planning to travel to this country and this is your first time, here are some of the things to remember to make your trip hassle-free.

Prepare all the documents you need

You will need a passport to enter Canada, even if you are driving across the border. If you are a U.S. citizen, you will not be required to obtain a visa; otherwise, you will need one to gain entry. Other countries are allowed entry without a visa. However, they are now required to get an eTA or Electronic Travel Authorization. If you are coming from one of these countries, submit your eTA Canada application online, which will only take a few minutes to complete.

You may make the application at least 72 hours before your target travel; although it is best to do it weeks in advance to make sure that you get it before your preferred travel date. Bring IDs and other documents that will prove your identity to make sure that you have something to present if the situation requires.

Determine the perfect time to visit

Summer is the most popular time to visit the country because the weather permits various activities that you can do outdoors. However, this is the peak season, so expect the prices to be higher than other seasons. The ideal travel time will be during the fall. The weather will be more comfortable at this time as it will not be too hot or cold in most places in the country. Plus, the prices will also not be as high compared to summer rates. Note that the weather varies in various regions of the country, so be sure to do your research on your target destination. Winter can be freezing cold, so be prepared with thick clothes and layers to keep you warm.

See what things you can and cannot bring

Upon entry, border security or immigration officers will check your items. To avoid any issues, know the things that you can and cannot bring. Packed foods are usually allowed, but not fresh, unpacked food items. There are also certain firearms that are not allowed. If you are carrying allowed guns, make sure that you have the right license and documents required.

Find out about the law

Learn about the general law, including driving and drinking laws as this may be different from those of your place, and this may also vary in the city that you are in. For instance, the legal drinking age is 18 or 20. Smoking is prohibited inside a vehicle if you are with a minor. The speed limit varies too.

Plan your itinerary

Canada is a vast country. It’s best to plan the things that you will do and specific places to visit, especially if you have limited time, to ensure that you make the most out of your trip.

The people in the country are friendly and courteous, so make sure that you show them the same behavior.
