How to Have the Best October

Best OctoberWhile Halloween is the main attraction of the month, there are so many wonderful activities that get overlooked every October. If you want to make the most of this fall season and have a blast, here is an extensive list of fun activities you should incorporate.

1.    Hot Air Balloon

You don’t have to go around the world in 100 days to enjoy a good old-fashioned hot air balloon ride. Even if the balloon is tied to a rope at a local fall festival, you can’t deny the spectacular view and amazing selfie you’re going to get.

Consider looking into one of the many balloon festivals that happen around this time of year and plan a road trip! While it might not be cheap to take a ride, it’s a once in a lifetime experience that will create fond memories to look back on.

2.    Arts and Crafts

If you live in the PNW, the pinecones are starting to drop and it’s the ideal time to gather them up to make bird feeders. Homemade bird feeders are fun, inexpensive way to spend time with your kids on a lazy Sunday.

Head to Michael’s and pick up your needed supplies (string and bird seed) and lay out some newspaper for easy clean-up from the peanut butter.

3.    Halloween Costume Shopping

With one of everyone’s favorite holidays just around the corner, it’s never a bad idea to start shopping for a costume. Head to an outlet save time that could be better spent with friends or family. Want to it even easier? Head online and browse Halloween costumes from Tipsy Elves. Their charming, festive onesies are sure to keep you cozy as you take the kids trick-or-treating or head out to a party with friends.

4.    Bake Some Festive Pies!

Fall is the perfect time of year to go apple picking and tackle your grandmother’s famous homemade apple pie recipe. Get some much-needed practice in before Thanksgiving rolls around and work on your crust.

There’s no better time to whip up a delectable pumpkin pie than October. The pumpkins are finally in-season so get your spices and recipe book ready!

5.    Hiking

As the leaves turn from green to that beautiful gold-brown we look forward to each year, there’s never a better time to go hiking than October. Throw on your favorite flannel and zip that down sweater vest and spend some time outside before it gets too cold and snowy.

While you’re out and about, consider gathering some leaves and foliage to make a fun fall wreath or collage when you get back!

6.    Make Homemade Apple Cider

Apple cider is extremely easy to make and a joy to drink. Pick up some mason jars and ribbon from your local grocery store and gift wrap your cider to give as a gift. Your family and friends will appreciate the personalized touch. Here is some instruction on how to whip up a killer batch of cider:

•    Place 10 large, quartered (red) apples in a crockpot and cover them with at least two inches of water. Stir in 1 tablespoon of ground cinnamon and 1 tablespoon of ground allspice.

•    Boil the mixture for an hour (uncovered). Reduced the heat and let simmer for 2 hours.

•    Strain the contents with a sieve and then again with a cheesecloth.

•    Refrigerate your cider and serve warm or cold!

Any extra apples you have left over can be used to make caramel apples for a Halloween party.

7.    Haunted House

What would October be without a classic haunted house? Get your family and friends together for a ghastly good time. Often, community centers and local churches will put on haunted houses as fundraisers.

Get crew together and give those Halloween costumes a test drive before the end of the month arrives.

8.    Theme Parks

Most of the major theme parks do a full-blown makeover for Halloween. If you’ve ever been to Disneyland in October, you know exactly what we’re talking about. Consider branching out this year and heading to Knott’s Berry Farm.

Every October, Knott’s goes from berry to scary and provides its guests with a spooky and thrilling experience. Ride some of the most intense and exciting roller coasters in North America and have a screaming fun adventure!

Take these activities into consideration as you map out your October and make it one to remember.
