6 Smart Ways To Climb The Career Ladder

health care careersClimbing the corporate ladder is something that most people think about when they’re in college. They want to let you know in college that your career is going to define what you do with yourself for the rest of your life. The thing is, you don’t have to be the smartest person in the boardroom to be able to climb the corporate ladder. Advancing your career is so much more than being smart – the unfortunate thing is that many companies want you to have certain pieces of paper to your name to be able to say that you are able to advance.

Making steps to do better for your career isn’t just about your salary prospects. Doing better means having better job security and in a way, more respect from your peers. Anyone with a solid ambition can succeed in the job market, because it takes tenacity to put yourself out there and ask for more from yourself. When you want to progress in your field, you need to look at what your choices and avenues are. Below, you’ll find six of the smartest ways to do better in the workplace and prove that you want more from your career.

Show Up. The best way to prove yourself in the workplace is to actually show up for work. Showing people that you want to be there, being on time and even sometimes working overtime can prove that you want more than what you’re getting. Being prepared for the day ahead of you and showing that you are willing to learn can do more for your career than you realise. It’s important that you can be visible for your employers to recognise how much effort you’re putting in.

Expand Your Learning. No matter what field that you’re in, there is always more to learn. In a trade job, there are always advancements to adapt to. There are also ways to expand your learning in fields like nursing, with online RN to BSN programs that you can invest in. Every time you pay for further education, you’re investing in yourself and that’s something to be proud of. It means that you recognise that you are worth investing in and are taking the time to do it.

Positive Attitudes Count. There is more to life than a boring commute, we all know that, but if you love your job then you also know that there is more to your career than being negative. A positive attitude makes you to stand out from the crowd and shows everyone that you are excited and passionate about your job. Negativity doesn’t have a place in a working environment if you want to get to the top.

Don’t Wait. When you’re in the workplace, recognising the opportunities available before you are asked to participate is important. You can take the initiative and implement processes that you believe are more efficient and take those to your management team. They will then see that you care about the progress of their company and you care about doing more in your role. Don’t wait around to be told how to do things, or you could miss out and be left in the weeds.

Find A Mentor. The best thing you can do in the workplace to get ahead is find a mentor and learn from them. Your learning and expanding in your job can only come when you find someone who’s been doing what you want to do and learning as much as you can from them. They can also put you in touch with the right people, so that you can build your network outside the company that you work for.

Offer Help. It’s common to believe that those on the top don’t care about the ones underneath, but you can break that thinking by being the sort of employee who does help those underneath them. Offer a hand to people in a more junior position and show them that there are avenues to go down to be better at their work. You will not be able to advance in your career by being cut-throat to others; you need to show empathy. Always put yourself in the shoes of others, as this is how you can learn to have compassion for their plight.

Your career is going to define how secure you are in life and where you go with everything. Take time to look after your own interests while supporting the interests of others, too. You’ll find your career far more fulfilling if you know that you are balancing your compassion with your ambition.
