5 rules how to travel safely as a student

The holidays are generally the time used by students to travel. Irrespective of the level of study, every student looks forward to spending time in different surroundings, doing activities other than studying and exams. Travel plans are usually made and arranged at least a month prior to the end of the session or semester. Tickets are bought, locations are chosen, visas gotten for international destinations and other details are put in place.

During traveling, learners are expected to take care of themselves and follow rules similar to safety measures at school. These measures include taking care of their belongings and staying alert and on the lookout for suspicious activities around them. They also include adhering to rules and regulations set down by authorities in airports, buses, trains and other transport bodies. Students are generally thought to be safer in school than outside.

Recently, however, security concerns in institutions have been on the rise. It is becoming common to find institutions where safety rules at school for students are challenged by unfortunate events. With a sudden spike in nationwide shootings in several US states, efforts have been intensified to ensure that students of all ages are safe. These efforts take into account student security not only during educational hours but before them (on the bus for instance) and after learning hours (going home, using the school bus or being picked by guardians). Even though school bus safety rules are followed most of the time, there have been instances where these quotas weren’t efficient enough to facilitate the security of those involved.

There are several factors one must consider when creating security conditions for learners. Some of these factors include age, location peculiarities of the education centers, the types of threats potentially posed in these areas and most importantly, awareness. It would be appalling if we were to try now to test hundreds of bus drivers about school bus stop laws – and find that a good number don’t know a thing about this. It would even be more appalling if school authorities did nothing to check their transport staff or the vehicles they use in transporting their students.

Students being safe is a collective effort on everyone’s part – teachers, staff, guardians and wards alike. Hence, we believe that enforcing the following rules could be helpful in boosting learners’ security:

  1. Safety belts

This might sound like a major investment, but getting adjustable seatbelts suited for student needs goes a long way to influence their safety. In cases where bus drivers need to slam on brakes in order to avert unforeseen accidents, students having their seat-belts on will be less likely to get injured. This is because their seat-belts would keep them from flying out of their seats on impact. A teacher can follow the designated bus to ensure every learner adjusts their belt properly.

  1. Security cameras

Security devices are usually installed in strategic places in educational institutions – playgrounds, libraries, major hallways, and cafeterias. The same idea can be adapted for school and excursion buses. These devices can be manned by one or more security officials. This allows the appropriate authorities to keep tabs on the level of safety during transits. Also, should any security threat be posed in any way to their learners, there would be enough evidence to work with, in order to prevent future recurrences.

  1. Drivers and school buses

There’s a lot to be said about the people that drive our kids to their learning centers. More than once there had been instances where the bus drivers weren’t adequately informed on what to do in specific emergencies. There have also been instances where these same people didn’t get to perform necessary servicing checks on their vehicles. It is important for every bus driver to understand that even the smallest system fails could pose serious risks to the safe levels of students on that bus. The smallest brake problem or steering wheel issue, if not addressed on time could put a lot of students in jeopardy. These things should be checked at least three times a year.

There should also be control tests for drivers in order to check their level of experience and ensure that only seasoned, professional drivers like Parkinson Coach school bus handle the buses.

  1. Follow the rules

Road safety rules aren’t created just for document keeping sake, but to ensure the safety of every individual that follows them, students included. Just like safety rules at home, the road safety regulations are meant to guide the traffic movements of vehicles and pedestrians alike. Every staff who deals with transport-related issues should be conversant with these points and any updates in them per time. Accidents are sometimes caused by appropriate personnel, not following road rules that were stated down. To avoid unpleasant events, both learners and staff must adhere to the regulations provided by the government.

  1. Creating awareness

This perhaps is the most essential aspect of safety for students anywhere. Learners everywhere must be taught the basics of safety and security; what to do in specific situations and how to conduct themselves. Teachers should be constantly briefed on how to manage students in their care during security problems. Parents must also be advised on these issues. In the long run, these schoolchildren are our future. We are all responsible for them during their formative years and beyond, and we should always seek out the best security measures to ensure their constant safety, even in cases of extreme danger.
