Protecting Yourself While Abroad

Exploring the planet is a great way to broaden your mind and add depth to your perspective, letting you adjust your opinions based on what you experience and find out from cultures different to your own. Sadly, however, nowhere is entirely safe and the carefree attitude with which most people embark upon their vacations can set them up for making foolish mistakes, leading to anything from mild embarrassment to injury or even death. To reduce the chances of this happening while you travel, here are a few tips to help you stay safe and protect yourself abroad.

One: Protect Your Belongings

Losing something important to you is a horrible feeling no matter where you are, but the added stress of losing it in a country far from home means that you will be even less likely to find it again. To protect your belongings, keep suitcases padlocked and sufficiently identifiable, either by attaching your name and contact details or by taking the extreme measure of printing your face onto the luggage itself. When staying at a hotel, always use the safe provided for your most valuable possessions and be secretive with the code. Busy tourist areas are popular for pickpockets too, and these people are very adept at spotting someone less familiar with the surroundings. Don’t keep important items in your pockets and, if you see pickpocket warning signs, avoid patting yourself in search of said items as many pickpockets have taken to watching where you keep your valuables on your person. Try not to take too much money with you each day so that if it is stolen, you have enough back at the hotel.

Two: Protect Your Safety

More important than your belongings: your safety. Unfamiliar countries offer extraordinary adventures but also unexpected dangers. Do your research and find out what common threats there are in the destination of your choosing. Is the weather extreme? Are the roads particularly busy? Especially when you first set foot off the plane, you are in a vulnerable position as the country is most likely new to you. Hiring the services of professionals who provide private airport transfers in Barcelona, for example, are great ways of reaching your destination with as little opportunity for danger as possible. Wait until you’ve settled in somewhat before getting brave and seeking thrills.

Three: Protect Your Health

Falling ill while on vacation is one of the most unpleasant things to happen when you’re trying to enjoy yourself. To avoid the trials of finding medical care abroad, it’s best to choose your food carefully and only drink water that is appropriate for use. Some countries vary greatly in how their ecosystem interacts with humans, and it is important to be aware of the potential side-effects that come with visiting a new country. Vaccinations prevent people catching illnesses that don’t exist in their home country. Some insects or other wildlife, including plants, can be indigenous to the area and therefore poisonous to foreigners. Listen to the advice of locals and keep yourself healthy.
