Dressing Your Best: How to Flatter Your Shape

Flatter Your ShapeFashion is a multi-billion-dollar industry in self-expression. There are options out there to suit every taste and every style and every size. Flattering your shape does not mean there are any hard and fast rules about what you can and cannot wear. What you wear is, and always will be, up to you. What dressing for your shape will do, however, is help you look your best and be comfortable. Who hasn’t bought something that looked great but was too tight and too restricting? Follow these tips, and your clothes will fit you like a glove and make you look fabulous.

  1. Get Fitted

Sometimes, all that is holding you back from wearing the right size is avoiding asking for help. You have likely gone into a bra store and seen a bra fitting service advertised by their experts. According to The Better Fit, not only should you do this with every brand, you should do it for different types of bras as well. You would be surprised at how well a non-wired bra or a strapless bra can fit you, if you only knew your correct size, and more importantly, what a different fabric or design can benefit you.

2. Find Your Own Models

Companies’ modeling campaigns are diversifying, which is a huge step into the right direction, but for many catalogs the variety of body shapes can be disheartening. It’s hard to imagine what you will look like when you don’t look like the women who wear the clothes in question. That is why you should find your own models. Look for stylish women your size on places like Instagram and Pinterest to see how they wear clothes, how different styles work on them, and so on.

3. Color by Complexion

There are cooler complexions and warmer complexions, and knowing which you are can help you dress in shades of each colour that work for you, instead of washing you out or looking dull on. The typical rule of thumb for this is whether you look best in gold, silver, or both metals, but there is a whole system if you are interested.

4. Materials that Work with You, Not Against You

It’s time to avoid a garment that looks good on but does not give you the comfort nor the flexibility you need to actually wear it. Not only is this a guaranteed way to not wear it enough to warrant wearing it, it’s also not how you’ll feel great when you are wearing it.

5. When in Doubt, Tailor It

When it comes to anything, of course, it will never look as great as it does if you go to a tailor to hem up the pant leg, or otherwise take your clothes in to fit you perfectly.

Dressing to flatter your shape means more than adhering to the shapes that the fashion industry has provided. It means, first and foremost, to find clothes that actually fit you, rather than ones that are too tight or too lose when they shouldn’t be. Doing this will make shopping more challenging, but the rewards are worth it.
