pet travel tips springTraveling with a dog can be bothersome, especially if it’s your first time. However, some of us just can’t afford to be separated from our beloved pets. There are also people who need the help of support animals to get on with their daily lives. However, there are some blunders that can make traveling with dogs a nightmare. In this article, we’re going to give you a few tips on how to travel with dogs properly.

Make Sure the Dog Is Healthy Before You Leave

Making sure the dog is healthy before you even start to pack your bags is really the first thing you should do. The last thing you want is to deal with a sick pet on the road. You should first take your pet to a veterinarian, so he can run a thorough evaluation to make sure everything is okay. Note that proper health certifications are necessary when you travel with your pet. Therefore, make sure that your dog has a clear vaccination record and that all inoculations are up to date. Also, make sure that you stock up on basic medicine and keep a supply of his favorite foods along with bottled or filtered water. A good idea would be to pick up flea medication like Frontline Plus, and carry it with you; you never know when you might need to deal with a flea infestation on the road.

Understand Air Travel Rules

Just because a particular airline allows pet cargo, this doesn’t mean that it’s without restrictions. There are specific guidelines that need to be followed and they differ airline to airline. Did you know that certain airlines will refuse to carry pets if it’s too hot or cold? Also, most airlines mandate that dogs traveling with them come in airline-approved crates. Some airlines do allow owners to keep small dogs under their seat, under the condition that they are kept inside an approved crate.

Prepare Hotel Accommodations

Just like air travel, proper preparations are necessary if you wish to stay in a hotel with your dog. You should, of course, know in advance if the hotel you’re thinking of visiting allows pets. This can be a challenge in destinations where dog ownership is not common. This is why it’s advisable no to take this feature for granted. The same advice goes for villas and vacation homes too. Some will simply not allow pets within their premises to maintain the integrity of the house.

Some hotel chains are more pet friendly than others. Best Western, for instance, is a good bet if you’re traveling with your dog. They will also go the extra mile and suggest activities and tell you about pet-friendly parks and hiking routes.

As you can see, traveling with a dog doesn’t have to be complicated. As long as you’re prepared for any eventuality, know the rules of the airlines, and find hotels that are dog-friendly, you should have a great time with your furry pal on your next vacation together.
