Safety Tips to Utilize While Hiking With Pets

Hiking With PetsHiking trips are a great way for both you and your pet to get some exercise. It also allows you to have a companion along for the adventure, so you are not alone for your long journey. Keeping your pet safe is key to making the trip last, so you want to be sure you utilize a few safety tips for keeping them both safe and healthy.

Update Their Vaccinations

Before you even think about heading out on a hike, you need to be sure your pet has their vaccinations updated. This will protect them against numerous types of illnesses they could contract while out in the wild. Check with their veterinarian to be sure all vaccinations have been received to date. Those that are missing will have to be completed before you can take your pet along.

Pack Products for Aches and Pains

A hike is a lot of exercise for a pet. They could develop aches and pains if they have to continue on the journey for a long time. In order to reduce the pains they are feeling, pack some products to help. Canna-Pet is an ideal option as it works to reduce inflammation and improve mood. This will prepare your pet for the journey ahead and ensure they are able to handle the task. There are capsules available, a liquid option, and even a biscuit form. You can order whichever option you know your pet is the most likely to consume.

Take Frequent Water Breaks

You want to be sure you keep your pet hydrated during your hike. Take frequent water breaks and allow your animal to drink as much as they need. Do not continue hiking until they have had their fair share of water. This will keep them hydrated and able to continue on. There are packs with hydration systems included that will allow you and your pet to have quick access to water. You can also use a simple water bottle and dish if that is your only option.

Offer Special Food

Food is just as important as water on a hike. You want to be sure you offer a special food blend that will keep your pet’s energy up on the long journey. You do not want to bring an entire bag, as this will make your pack heavy, but you can bring a container filled with food so you are sure your pet has enough. A food with high quality ingredients is key. It should include easy to digest ingredients, such as rice or corn. A food that specifies it is for an active dog is also important to offer.

Visit the Vet When You Arrive Home

Once you arrive home from your hiking trip, you should double check with your vet that your pet is fine. You never know if a tick ended up biting your dog on the hike, or whether they had enough food and water. Having them be checked over a final time before heading home is a simple precaution that will ensure no major issues have occurred while on the trip. This will allow you to return home with a healthy pet that just got to experience a unique adventure with you by their side.

Safety is key while hiking. This is not only true for you, but a pet you are hoping to bring along on your trip as well. With these safety measures in mind, you can be sure you and your pet are fully prepared for the long hillside ahead to climb.
