Running Out of Charge: How to Preserve Your Mobile Phone’s Battery Life

battery lifeEvery year, manufacturers release better smartphone models that are faster, more powerful, and have better cameras than the year before. But one issue remains a problem even in top-of-the-range models: Battery power.

If you use your cellphone throughout the day, there is a good chance that it will be running on empty by the time you get home.

So how can you get more juice from your battery to keep your phone running for longer? Here are some tips that will help you.

Dim Your Display

The best smartphones these days come with amazing displays. You only need to take one look at the specs of the latest handsets, and you’ll see that the top Samsung models and the iPhone have stunning displays. But unfortunately, a big and bright display is a big battery drainer.

You can save a lot of juice by dimming your display. This is simple to do on most phones in the settings. Alternatively, turn on the auto-brightness setting so the phone can use a dimmer screen when necessary to save more battery power.

Turn Off GPS

Location tracking is very useful when you are using your mapping application. However, it is very power hungry, and it can be a big drain on the phone.

If you are not actually using your GPS, turn it off. GPS is essential for some apps to function properly, but if you are not using these, switch the GPS off and make your phone last longer.

Use Airplane Mode when You Are Not Using the Phone

If you are not using your phone for a few hours, and you do not mind about missing calls or emails, switch it to airplane mode. This turns off Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, 3G and other functions, all of which use up more power. Your phone continues to scan to pick up a good connection if the signal is poor, and these repeated searches are bad for the battery, so switch them all off and save energy.

Reduce App Notifications

Many phones are constantly pinging with notifications. But do you really need all of these? Perhaps they even annoy you. So turn them off, and you can control your notifications for all your apps easily in the settings.

Prevent It from Heating Up

Hot phones use up more battery power, so try to keep your phone as cool as possible. This is an easy way to ensure your battery lasts for longer. Just keep it out of direct sunlight, and remove the case if it is getting too hot when you are using it a lot.

Don’t Use Animations

Animations are popular in some of the best phones like the iPhone. These include 3D effects and dynamic backgrounds. Do you need these? If not, turn them off. They use up a lot of power and you probably won’t miss them.

Turn Off Email Push Notifications

Email push notifications are really useful if you use email a lot. With these, you receive your emails as soon as they arrive in your inbox rather than checking for them manually. But this does come at a cost to your battery.

If you don’t need your emails to arrive straight away, change the settings so that you only check once an hour. You could even check them manually if you prefer.

Don’t Use Vibrations

We’ve already mentioned turning off notifications when you don’t need them, but you can also turn off vibrations to save power. Vibrating alarms and notifications can be very handy, especially when you need to turn the sound off or when you are in a noisy area and might not hear the notifications.

But turn them off if you don’t need them because they can use up a lot of battery power. You should be able to do this in any smartphone running Android or an iPhone.

Make Screen Timeout Shorter

You can usually change the amount of time it takes your phone for the screen to timeout. Choose from a few seconds up to five minutes, and obviously the longer the screen stays on, the more power the phone will use. If you tend to let your phone turn off by itself rather than turning it off manually, keep the timeout as short as possible.

Make Your Phone Last Longer Every Day

No matter how great they make the latest smartphones, battery power is one area where they continue to suffer. So if you want to get more out of your phone so that you are not constantly worrying about whether it will turn off before the end of the day, use these tips and get more life from your battery.

To be honest, most likely you will just have to change the phone, or give it for repair to replace the battery after some time. This is normal if after active use your phone starts to hold battery power poorly
